CRAZY FOR YOU in China!


In the center of Beijing (with all of the power which that implies in today’s world), there sits since 1949 (the year the country was officially founded), The Central Academy of Drama. It is the Julliard of China but more than that it operates directly under the PRC’s Ministry of Culture. The hopes and desires of the country (and its sometimes contradictory responsibilities of Culture and Propaganda) and the top young actors of the land, rest and struggle here. In addition to producing a significant number of China’s stage, television and film stars, the Academy introduced a program in musical theater over 10 years ago. But in those days China took small steps slowly, especially at embracing an American art form.

US Talent goes to Shanghai Theatre of Drama

Here is a representation of the Shanghai Academy Artists in Residence! Over a five week period the team is instructing the new Music Theater Center at the Academy, the most controversial Broadway tuner in China, MISS SAIGON. Just take a beat and imagine the Chinese ensemble being introduced to, grasping the complex understanding of and finally performing as if they were there…the quintessential theater piece about the Vietnam War.

Don & The National Theatre of China


Don meets with members of The National Theatre of China, as we embark on a new endeavor. The Final Struggle is a family drama that is both revolutionary and profound, revealing the inside of a culture so foreign yet so personal. It’s the first of its kind created in China, displaying the opposite sides of the political spectrum within a family built within the Communist Party. The play has recently been translated into English, with hopes of a production in the United States next winter
